Issue #38 - Fall 2010

Editorial Comment Highlights

issue38

In second grade, Jane slid under a chain link fence while playing tag. She cut her shin open to the bone. It took twenty-one stitches to close the gash. After that, I sort of fell into following Jane around. It was easy. I just had to watch her feet and see the next move.

Pay Up,
by Brittany Graham

The cutbacks have come, and magazines and arts organizations are feeling the hit. Sometimes, it is wise not to look around at the increasingly barren arts landscape, but simply to don blinkers and plod forward to the next issue in the hope that things will change. This issue, number thirty- eight, is another contest issue, in which we feature the winners and honourable mentions in both poetry and fiction. Once again, we are indebted to ABE Books for their unfaltering support in this enterprise. They have been a staunch and generous supporter of the Claremont Review for over five years now, and because of their sponsorship, this magazine has been able to attract entries from all across North America. As a result, the following pages are full of wonderful stories and poems for our readers. We have repeat winners from previous years, as well as entirely new faces, and the quality of the submissions, particularly in poetry, was once again amazing. Our able judges have done the difficult work of selecting the few winners, and, while it would be rude to steal their thunder–please, read their comments in advance of the winning entries–the editorial board is unanimous in its agreement that stories like Brittany Graham’s “Pay Up” and poems of the calibre of Maggie Reagan’s “Cygnet” are more than examples of brilliant writing, they are solid evidence of successful careers in the making. We will be hearing from these writers for years to come.
So, to those of you who find your way to these pages, we urge you to sit down, forget the world for a while and sample some of the voices that represent the future of writing. We also hope that, once you are done, you will take the time to become a supporter of this now venerable magazine by purchasing a subscription, either for yourself or for some young friend or family member who may harbour a secret desire to write. There’s inspiration between these covers. Breathe it in.
